CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 3.0 Introduction This chapter discussed about types of study used in this research. Other than that, the population and sample have been selected in this study is public listed companies under PN17 category by Bursa Malaysia. The data will be collected through a secondary data which is the annual reports of the companies. Meanwhile, the measurement of variable also has been discussed in this research. Besides, the statistical analysis consists of four types of test which are descriptive analysis, reliability test, normality test and correlation analysis. Finally, this chapter concludes by summary of the chapter. 3.1 Type of study This study uses correlation analysis and descriptive analysis, but the main type of test that are used in this study are correlation analysis. 3.1.1 Correlation Analysis The correlation analysis are a process to examine whether there are relationship or not between dependant and independent variables (Higgins, 2005). The Pearson Correlation measures the linear association between two metric variables. The number representing the Pearson correlation is referred to as a correlation coefficient. It ranges from -1.00 to +1.00, with zero representing absolutely no association between two metric variables. While -1.00 or +1.00 is possible and represents a perfect association between two variables, it very seldom occurs. The larger the correlation coefficient, the stronger the linkage or level of association. Like Michael Gallagher, Glen McGrath lost a loved one and has not stopped fighting for what he believes in since his personal conflict. His wife, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer. Jane McGrath had a passionate belief that every woman diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia should be able to benefit from the support of a specialist breast care nurse. Therefore, together they started up the McGrath Foundation in 2002. An additional aim of the project was to increase the awareness of breast cancer in younger women. Jane passed away at the age of 41. Glen McGrath is more determined and devoted to the McGrath foundation by the inspiration of his loving wife. The Valley of Ashes symbolises the loss of the â€Å"American dream† for so many. There is a strong contrast between The Valley of Ashes and Myrtles apartment; her apartment symbolising the wealth and extravagance of New York. The use of the contrasting setting highlights the divide in American society at the time the novel is set in. The Valley of Ashes is different to other settings in the book; the valley of ashes is a picture of absolute desolation and poverty. It lacks a glamorous surface and lies fallow and grey halfway between West Egg and New York. New York City, is in every way the opposite of the valley of ashes—it is loud, garish, abundant, and glittering. Symbols are used in this chapter; one of the most iconic symbols would be the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg; â€Å"blue and gigantic- their retinas are one yard high. † These eyes seem to watch other the Valley of Ashes and have an almost God like presence about them; Fitzgerald uses the eyes to represent the judgement and conviction surrounding the Valley of Ashes. The eyes are used to show the damnation of all those who have been caught up in the destruction of The Valley of Ashes. It is important that the reader is able to pick up on the desperation of those in The Valley of Ashes in order to have a better understanding of the rest of the novel; Dr T. J. Eckleburg’s eyes help to do this. The symbolic value of the eyes have been left open to interpretations however is possible that they represent the eyes of God, staring down at the moral decay of the 1920s. The faded paint of the eyes can be seen as symbolizing the extent to which humanity has lost its connection to God.
